Precision wind speed and direction data capture for dynamic positioning systems
Automatic vessel control
Wind speed and direction can significantly affect the position of a ship relative to an oil platform. Regulations require that vessels record weather data, including wind speed on a regular basis, with data displayed continuously on the bridge.
On-board wind sensors provide data directly to the ship’s dynamic position system, which automatically controls ship thrusters to counteract the affect of the wind to keep the ship on station when manoeuvring alongside oil platforms.
Low maintenance, high confidence
All Gill wind sensors are solid-state requiring no regular maintenance. On the WindObserver wind sensor an automatic quality message is provided, giving confidence that data received is valid and can be trusted.
Increased system safety
High quality wind speed and direction data is essential to ensure accurate control of a vessel, especially during high wind storm conditions. Gill products are proven in DPS applications and supported by formal offshore evaluation by our customers.
Application note
Recommended wind sensors for dynamic positioning systems...

Gill WindSonic is a low-cost 2-axis ultrasonic anemometer, providing wind speed and direction data in a robust housing. This anemometer has no moving parts, offering maintenance-free operation in a wide range of applications.

Gill WindObserver 65 is a precision industrial anemometer, offering wind speed (0-65m/s) and direction data in a robust stainless-steel construction. WindObserver 65 has an optional heating system and is available with a range of mounting and connection options.
WindObserverIS carries intrinsic safety ATEX approval for use in hazardous areas and monitors wind speeds of 0-75m/s. WindObserverIS is particularly suited to offshore oil platform applications.
