The met station is nobody main job

A deployable met capability is set up by people whose primary task is something else, in conditions that are rarely convenient, against a timeline that was set by the operation rather than by the equipment.

That changes what good looks like. A station with a better specification that takes an hour to commission has cost an hour that was not available, and it will be set up incorrectly the third time because the person doing it has done it twice.

It also has to keep working afterwards without attention. Whatever needs a service visit will not get one, so the specification decision that matters most is how much the equipment asks for once it is running.

Defence sensing map

Every operational decision starts at a measurement point

Switch between land, sea and air: vehicles, perimeters and deployable sites; ship’s wind, flight decks and machinery; uncrewed aircraft, landing points, airfields and ranges.

Choose on land, at sea or in the air, then explore 28 measurement points to see what is being measured, where the measurement happens and which sensing technology fits the application.

Setup time, power and robustness, ahead of specification

One unit and one cable is the single biggest reduction in setup time. A compact all-in-one station returns wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, solar radiation and rainfall on one output string, which is one mounting, one connection and one configuration.

Weight decides what can be carried and how quickly it goes up. GMX200 measures wind at 0.5 kg, and that difference is often what puts the sensor at the right height rather than at a convenient one.

Power decides how long it runs unattended. A deployable site is on batteries, a generator or solar, and every watt of sensor is a watt of something else or an earlier resupply.

Robustness closes it. There is no field repair capability for a met sensor on a deployed site, so anything with a rotating element is a single point of failure with no recovery.

One unit, one cable, one output string

Every separate sensor is another mounting, another cable, another configuration and another thing to get wrong in poor conditions. Reducing that to one item is worth more in the field than a better figure on a datasheet.

MaxiMet brings wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, solar radiation and rainfall into a single instrument. GMX551 carries the broad parameter set, and GMX200 provides wind only at 0.5 kg where that is all that is required.

Nothing to service, nothing to repair

A deployed station is not going to be maintained. Whatever fails stays failed until the site is recovered, which makes the absence of moving parts an operational characteristic rather than an engineering nicety.

Ultrasonic wind measurement has no rotating sensing element to ice, foul, wear or seize, and heated options including WindSonic M operate to -40 degrees C where the deployment goes somewhere cold.

No moving parts, no field repair

Deployed measurement is still evidence

Met data from a deployed site supports operational decisions that get reviewed afterwards, and ballistic, aviation and safety applications all reach back to the conditions recorded at the time.

Calibration is what keeps that usable. Instruments held on a traceable interval between deployments arrive already defensible, rather than being calibrated retrospectively against a record nobody can verify.

Labcal is an independent UKAS-accredited laboratory operating to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, calibrating equipment from any manufacturer, which suits an inventory assembled over several procurements.

UKAS-accredited calibration for six measurement parameters

Labcal is an independent UKAS-accredited calibration laboratory, Lab 0625, operating to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. It provides calibration across gas and air flow, air velocity, liquid flow, pressure, temperature and humidity.

For an inventory carrying anemometers, thermal probes, pressure instruments, thermometers, temperature and humidity probes and data loggers, often procured across several programmes, one accredited laboratory keeps everything on a single traceable schedule.

Getting data off a site with no infrastructure

A deployable site has whatever power and communications were carried to it, and the measurement has to fit inside both rather than assume either.

Gill supports environmental monitoring, industrial sensing, embedded electronics and systems integration, so defence users, integrators and equipment manufacturers can bring measurement into deployed systems.

Whether the requirement is a serial string into a deployed system, SDI-12 into a low-power logger, or analogue into an existing channel, Gill engineers can support integration from specification through commissioning.

Outputs and options

  • Modbus RTU : Site systems and SCADA
  • SDI-12 & serial : Loggers and remote telemetry
  • 4-20 mA & 0-10 V : Existing analogue channels
  • Traceable calibration : So the record holds up on review

What the specification looks like in practice

01

One unit, one cable

A compact all-in-one station is one mounting, one connection and one configuration rather than six.

02

Light enough to site properly

GMX200 measures wind at 0.5 kg, which decides whether the sensor goes where it should or where it was easy.

03

Low power, so it runs on

Low-power operation suits battery, generator and solar deployments where resupply is the constraint.

04

Nothing to repair in the field

No rotating sensing element to ice, foul, wear or seize, on a site with no repair capability.

05

Heated where it is cold

WindSonic M operates to -40 degrees C in heated aluminium, and WindObserver is heated 316 stainless.

06

Traceable between deployments

Independent UKAS-accredited calibration across six parameters, for equipment from any manufacturer.

Questions about deployable and expeditionary sites

Deployable met capability

Setup time, power draw and robustness, generally ahead of headline specification. The station is set up by people with another primary task, in poor conditions, and it will not be maintained afterwards.

Gill engineering insightA better instrument that takes an hour to commission has taken an hour that was not available, and it will be set up incorrectly the third time.

GMX200 provides wind-only measurement at 0.5 kg. WindUltra is a compact 2-axis ultrasonic anemometer designed for vehicle, UAV and USV mounting, sealed and rated IP66, IP68 and IP69K.

Heated options are available across the range. WindSonic M is heated aluminium operating to -40 degrees C, and WindObserver is heated 316 stainless at IP66, icing tested to MIL-STD-810F.

The sensors are specified for low-power operation and suit battery, generator and solar supply. The power budget should be confirmed against the deployment length as part of specification.

Often the requirement changes that way. Where a site becomes established and siting starts to matter, MetConnect separates the sensors by height and accepts third-party, analogue and Pt100 inputs.
