LEVEL SENSORS
When the liquid is difficult, the sensor shouldn’t be
Fuel, oil, water, coolant, wastewater and other fluids all behave differently. Then add vibration, limited space, weight restrictions or an installation that may be difficult to reach. Gill’s capacitive level sensors remove the mechanical parts that can stick, wear or foul, giving you a solid-state approach to continuous liquid-level measurement.
The range covers five sensors, from lightweight, weight-critical applications to difficult conductive and viscous media, plus a local display option.
We aim to respond in one working day.

The technology
Nothing moves. That changes the maintenance equation.
A float can stick. A reed switch can pit. A mechanical gauge can wear or foul.
Gill's capacitive level sensors use the change in capacitance between the probe and the surrounding medium to determine liquid level. There is no float, rotating mechanism or mechanical switch in the measurement.
That makes the technology particularly useful where contamination, difficult fluids, sealed tanks, vibration or restricted access make mechanical components undesirable. Every sensor in the range is solid-state, fully sealed and factory calibrated.

The range
The liquid makes the first decision
There are five sensors in the range, but choosing between them is not simply a case of comparing model numbers. The fluid, platform and installation usually narrow the choice much faster.

LevelPro
The dependable starting point. A general-purpose sensor for fuel, oil and fluid-level measurement.

LevelLite
When every gram has a job to do. For weight-critical platforms.

LevelSlick
For liquids that don't play nicely: conductive, viscous, corrosive or carrying suspended matter. Tank profiling, full and empty alarms.

LevelDefend
Built around the platform, not the catalogue. For defence vehicles and military marine craft.

Catch tank level sensor
One job. Done properly. A dedicated oil catch-tank sensor for endurance motorsport, with a sealed construction designed for the application.
Need a local readout? The Liquid Level Display is the display accessory for every sensor in the range.

How to choose
Start with the liquid. Then look at the platform.
The medium usually tells you which technologies are suitable. The platform then determines the construction, weight, installation and interface requirements. Need a local readout? Add the Liquid Level Display.

Installation and specification
The details are where a sensor either fits or doesn't
Once the sensing technology is established, the practical specification takes over. Probe length. Tank geometry. Mounting. Supply voltage. Output. Fluid compatibility. Operating temperature. Environmental sealing. Receiving system. These details determine whether a sensor is merely capable of measuring the liquid or actually suitable for the application.
The level sensor range is supported by datasheets, manuals, configuration information and direct access to Gill engineering expertise. Where something is application-specific, our engineers can help establish the appropriate configuration.

The tank changes. So does the sensor.
Level measurement turns up in very different places, and the conditions around the tank can be more important than the liquid itself.

On LevelPro, the current output is 4 to 20 mA and needs a 250 Ohm load resistor across the output. The switch output needs a pull-up resistor of 1 kOhm to 10 kOhm.
CUSTOM
When five options still aren’t enough
Some applications fall outside a standard configuration.
That is where Gill’s custom level-sensing capability comes in. The requirement might involve the physical construction, probe dimensions, materials, output, mounting or the conditions the sensor needs to withstand.
The starting point is the application, not a blank sheet of paper.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is a capacitive level sensor?
A capacitive level sensor measures liquid level by detecting the change in capacitance between a probe and the surrounding medium. Gill's level sensors use solid-state electronics with no moving parts in the measurement.
Which Gill level sensor should I choose?
Start with the liquid and the platform. LevelPro is the general-purpose option. LevelLite is designed for weight-critical platforms. LevelSlick is for electrically conductive, difficult liquids. LevelDefend is developed for defence applications, while the catch tank level sensor is designed specifically for endurance motorsport.
Do Gill level sensors have moving parts?
No. The Gill level sensor range uses capacitive sensing without floats, mechanical switches or other moving components in the measurement.
Do Gill level sensors work with any liquid?
Not necessarily. In particular, LevelSlick is intended for electrically conductive liquids. Fluid characteristics and wetted materials should be checked before specifying a sensor.
What output options are available?
Output options vary by model and can include voltage, current, RS232, CAN and resistive output. LevelDefend outputs are specified according to the customer requirement.
What probe lengths are available?
Probe length varies by model and application. LevelLite supports probe lengths up to around 750 mm, while LevelSlick supports probes up to 2 m. Other configurations should be confirmed against the specific product requirement.
Do I need a 250 Ohm load resistor?
Yes, on LevelPro. The current output is 4 to 20 mA and needs a 250 Ohm load resistor across the output. The switch output needs a pull-up resistor of 1 kOhm to 10 kOhm.
