One lift over a live street.
One wind reading you can defend.
Ultrasonic wind measurement at the jib and at the boundary, so lift decisions and the dust and noise record that answers complaints come from the same installation.
Two problems, both answered by wind data
A city site lifts over a public street, which makes the wind limit an immediate safety decision with a stoppage cost attached. The measurement that supports it belongs at the jib, which is the least accessible point on the site.
The same site generates dust and noise at a boundary that is metres from somebody window, and complaints arrive days later asking what conditions were at a particular time.
Both questions are answered by wind measurement, and they are usually solved separately by different contractors with different equipment. One installation covering the jib and the boundary answers both and produces one record.
One building. Seventeen measurement points.
A building measures from the roof to the basement, and from the plant room to the pavement outside.
Wind above the parapet, at the facade and at the kerb. Conditions for ventilation and plant. Rainfall and level for drainage. Position on everything that moves. Measurement for the machinery that keeps the building operating.
Rooftop weather station
The roof is where a building finds out what the weather is actually doing, and it is the only place a met station can go without arguing with the architect.
- MaxiMet GMX551 wind, T, H, P, solar and rainfall in one housing
- MetConnect One Modbus and SDI-12 into the BMS
- WindObserver 75 316 stainless, IP66, for an exposed high roof
Rooftop plant and HVAC

- WindMaster 3-axis for ventilation and air-flow control
- MaxiMet GMX500 wind, temperature, humidity and pressure in one unit

- WindMaster Pro 3-axis to 32 Hz for buffeting and vortex work
- WindObserver 75 open head, accurate across a wide flow angle
Facade access and cradles
A building maintenance unit stops at a wind speed, and the crew on the cradle would rather that number came from the facade than the airport.

- WindObserver 75 where the facade position is severely exposed
- Blade position sensors non-contact position feedback on the cradle drive

- MetConnect THP two analogue inputs for dust and noise monitors
- WindSonic 60 a compact wind reference on the hoarding

- WindSonic 60 0.5 kg, discreet enough for a street mounting
- MaxiMet GMX200 wind only, for a short pedestrian-comfort survey

- Blade360 contactless rotary position for barrier arms
- Blade Dual Output a second independent channel where redundancy is required
Kerbside air quality
An air quality reading without wind beside it cannot be attributed to the road, the site or the plant, which is exactly what everyone wants to know.

- Recalibration scheduling intervals, reminders and turnaround
The jib decision and the boundary record
At the jib, wind decides whether the lift proceeds, and the number applies to the load rather than to the site. Sail area and configuration change the limit, so the operator needs a live reading rather than a threshold somebody set once.
A compound mast measures a sheltered corner of a site surrounded by the building under construction and by hoardings, which is the wrong answer to a question about conditions at the load.
At the boundary, wind speed and direction turn a dust or noise measurement into an attribution. A concentration reading on its own says something was present; the same reading with wind direction says where it came from.
Both instruments sit in a demolition and construction environment for the duration of a programme, with no maintenance window that anybody wants to take, which rules out anything with a rotating element.
The limit applies to the load
Wind at the jib tip, at the load and at ground level are three different numbers on the same site at the same moment. The one that matters is the one where the load is.
WindSonic measures 0 to 60 or 0 to 75 m/s at 0.5 kg, light enough to mount at the jib without a structural conversation, with no moving parts to seize where nobody can reach it.
Measured where the load is
View WindSonicDirection turns a reading into an attribution
Dust and noise complaints are about a place and a time, and answering them needs more than a concentration. Wind speed and direction recorded alongside the measurement are what establish whether the site was the source.
A compact station at the hoarding provides that alongside the rest of the record. MaxiMet brings wind, temperature, humidity, pressure, solar radiation and rainfall into one unit, and analysers can be integrated into the same station.
Answered with direction, not just a number
View MaxiMetComplaints and claims both arrive late
Dust and noise complaints, delay claims and incident reviews all arrive after the fact and ask about a specific time. A site that recorded conditions continuously can answer; one that did not has to negotiate.
Traceable calibration is what makes those answers hold. For a lift stoppage it supports the delay position, and for a boundary complaint it supports the attribution.

UKAS-accredited calibration for six measurement parameters
Labcal is an independent UKAS-accredited calibration laboratory, Lab 0625, operating to ISO/IEC 17025:2017. It provides calibration across gas and air flow, air velocity, liquid flow, pressure, temperature and humidity.
For a construction site carrying anemometers, thermal probes, pressure instruments, thermometers, temperature and humidity probes, analysers and data loggers, one accredited laboratory keeps equipment from several contractors on a single traceable schedule.
Gas meters · Mass flow controllers · Dispensing systems
Anemometers · Pitot tubes · Thermal probes
Flow meters and sensors · Process control equipment
Gauges · Transducers · Manometers · Transmitters
Thermometers · Probes · Thermocouples · Data loggers
Hygrometers · Probes · Transmitters
Getting both measurements where they are used
The jib reading is acted on in a cab within seconds, and the boundary record is read weeks later by somebody answering a complaint. The same installation has to serve both.
Gill supports environmental monitoring, industrial sensing, embedded electronics and systems integration, so contractors, crane suppliers and monitoring providers can bring measurement into cab displays, site systems and monitoring platforms.
Whether the requirement is an analogue signal into a cab display, Modbus into a site system, a serial string into a monitoring platform, or analyser integration into one station, Gill engineers can support integration from specification through commissioning.
Outputs and options
- Analogue & serial : Cab displays and crane indicators
- Modbus RTU : Site systems and monitoring platforms
- Analyser inputs : Dust and noise instruments into one station
- Traceable calibration : So the record holds up on review
What the specification looks like in practice
Measured where the load is
Jib-tip, load and ground-level wind are three different numbers, and only one of them applies to the lift.
Nothing to seize at the jib
No rotating sensing element to ice, foul or seize in a position reached by climbing the crane.
Light enough to mount properly
WindSonic measures 0 to 75 m/s at 0.5 kg, so it goes where the measurement should be.
Direction makes the attribution
Wind direction alongside a boundary reading is what establishes whether the site was the source.
One installation, two jobs
The lift decision and the complaint record come from the same equipment and the same record.
Defensible when it is reviewed
Independent UKAS-accredited calibration across six parameters, for equipment from any manufacturer.
Questions about urban construction sites
At the jib tip for the reading the lift decision needs, because that is the most exposed point and the closest to the load. A compound mast is sheltered by the building under construction and by the hoardings.
That is set by the crane manufacturer and the lift plan rather than by the instrument. Limits depend on configuration and on the sail area of the load, so the operator needs a live reading rather than a fixed threshold.
Because it turns a dust or noise measurement into an attribution. A concentration on its own says something was present; the same reading with wind direction says where it came from.
Yes. The station can accept third-party and analogue inputs, so dust and noise instruments can be brought into the same record rather than logged separately.
Ultrasonic sensors have no rotating element to foul or seize, and WindUltra is sealed and rated IP66, IP68 and IP69K for mobile plant. There is no service visit required during the programme.
Yes. Labcal is an independent UKAS-accredited calibration laboratory, Lab 0625, operating to ISO/IEC 17025:2017, calibrating equipment from any manufacturer across gas and air flow, air velocity, liquid flow, pressure, temperature and humidity.
