When the vessel has to stay put, the measurements cannot drift

A dynamic positioning system continuously calculates the forces acting on a vessel and adjusts its thrusters and propellers to maintain position and heading. Wind, current and waves are constantly changing the conditions, so the system needs dependable information to respond appropriately.

That makes the sensors part of the DP architecture, rather than simply instruments attached to it. Environmental measurements need to arrive quickly and accurately, while feedback from propulsion, steering and other vessel systems needs to remain dependable throughout operation.

For operators and system designers, the question is therefore broader than whether a sensor can produce a reading. It is whether that measurement can be trusted, integrated and maintained as part of a critical vessel system.

What the DP system needs to know

A DP system combines information from several sources to understand both the vessel and the forces acting upon it.

Wind speed and direction provide an environmental reference. Position and rotary sensing can provide feedback from propulsion and steering systems, while level sensing supports monitoring of fuel, ballast and other vessel systems. Each measurement has a different role, but together they contribute to the information used to maintain position and heading.

That creates requirements beyond measurement accuracy alone. Response time, environmental protection, communications, physical installation and measurement confidence all have to work within the wider vessel architecture.

Gill provides sensing technologies across these requirements, from ultrasonic wind measurement to non-contact position and level sensing. Where calibration is required, Labcal provides UKAS-accredited calibration services for the wider measurement ecosystem.

Where a DP system gets its environmental picture

A dynamic positioning system holds a vessel on station by balancing the forces acting on it. Wind is the one it can measure directly. Select a point to see what is measured there and which sensors are specified.

Eight measurement points on a vessel working DP: the wind references the control loop reads, the feedback that proves a thruster did what it was told, and the evidence behind the numbers.

For critical systems, one measurement is rarely the whole answer

DP vessels are designed around redundancy because a single failure should not compromise the ability to maintain position. That principle extends into the measurement architecture.

Multiple sensors and independent measurement sources can provide the control system with additional information and allow discrepancies to be identified rather than silently accepted. The exact architecture depends on vessel class, DP notation, system design and operational requirements.

Gill’s role is to provide measurement technologies that can form part of that wider architecture, with products selected according to the environmental conditions, required performance and integration requirements of the application.

More than wind measurement

Dynamic positioning creates a broader sensing requirement than the anemometer alone.

Gill’s ultrasonic wind sensors provide environmental measurement, while the wider sensing range extends into liquid level, position and condition monitoring. This allows different parts of the vessel’s measurement architecture to be considered together rather than sourcing every requirement through a different technology provider.

The sensor has to survive the vessel as well as measure it

Marine installations bring together salt, moisture, vibration, movement, temperature changes and restricted access. Depending on where a sensor is installed, there may also be significant consequences associated with losing measurement availability.

Gill’s marine sensing products are designed for demanding vessel and offshore environments, with relevant products offering environmental protection, marine approvals and construction appropriate to their intended application.

Specification therefore starts with more than the measurement itself. The installation environment, required approvals, physical mounting and lifecycle expectations all need to be considered.

Confidence in the measurement does not end at commissioning

For critical sensing applications, knowing how a measurement performed when the equipment left the factory is only part of the picture. Verification throughout the operating life of the equipment provides a way to identify changes in measurement performance and maintain traceability where required.

Through Labcal, Gill customers have access to UKAS-accredited calibration capability covering a broad range of measurement technologies. This provides a useful wider service ecosystem for vessels carrying multiple types of measurement equipment.

The objective is not simply to measure more. It is to give the control system dependable information about the vessel and the environment around it.

One vessel. More than one sensing requirement.

Gill brings together environmental and industrial sensing technologies under one engineering organisation, allowing marine system designers to address different measurement requirements without treating each sensor as an isolated component.

The relationship can begin with a wind measurement requirement and extend into position, level, condition monitoring, calibration or bespoke engineering as the vessel architecture demands it.

That breadth matters when the objective is not simply to specify a sensor, but to build a measurement system that remains dependable throughout the operational life of the vessel.

Questions about sensing for dynamic positioning

Dynamic positioning (DP) is a vessel control system that automatically maintains position and heading using thrusters and propellers. It continuously combines information from position, heading, environmental and vessel systems to determine the required response as wind, waves, current and other forces change.

A DP system can use several sources of measurement, including wind sensors, position and motion reference systems, gyrocompasses and feedback from propulsion and steering systems. The exact sensor architecture depends on the vessel, DP class, operational requirements and system design. Gill provides ultrasonic wind sensors alongside industrial sensing technologies for position, level and condition monitoring.

Wind creates an external force on a vessel that the DP system needs to account for when maintaining position and heading. Accurate wind speed and direction provide information about changing environmental conditions, allowing the control system to respond appropriately. Gill ultrasonic wind sensors provide continuous wind measurement without mechanical wind-sensing components.

A wind sensor used in DP should be assessed for accuracy, response time, environmental protection, communications, power requirements, marine suitability and the redundancy requirements of the wider system. Gill provides ultrasonic wind sensors designed for demanding marine and offshore applications.

DP systems are designed around redundancy, with the specific requirements depending on the vessel, DP class, notation and system architecture. Independent measurement sources can help maintain system availability and allow discrepancies to be identified. Sensor selection should therefore be considered as part of the wider DP architecture rather than in isolation.

The required wind measurement accuracy depends on the DP system, vessel and operating conditions. Accuracy should be considered alongside response time, output rate, environmental performance, installation and redundancy requirements rather than treated as a single specification in isolation. Gill can help assess wind-sensor selection against the requirements of the application.

Response requirements depend on the vessel, control architecture and operating conditions. A DP system needs environmental information quickly enough to account for changing forces acting on the vessel. Gill ultrasonic wind sensors provide rapid wind measurement and output configurations suitable for demanding marine applications.

Yes. Wind sensors are widely used as part of the environmental measurement architecture on vessels operating offshore and with dynamic positioning systems. Gill provides marine ultrasonic wind sensors designed for exposed environments and continuous operation.

The wider vessel measurement architecture can include position, rotary, level and machinery-condition sensing alongside environmental wind measurement. Gill provides non-contact position sensing, solid-state liquid level sensing and WearDetect oil-debris monitoring alongside its ultrasonic wind sensors.

Sensors should be specified according to the measurement required, accuracy, response time, environmental conditions, power requirements, communications, approvals and redundancy architecture. Gill recommends considering each sensor as part of the wider measurement chain and control architecture rather than specifying the measurement in isolation.

Integration depends on the DP architecture and the interfaces supported by the selected sensor and control system. Gill wind sensors provide established outputs including NMEA 0183 and serial communications, allowing measurement data to be incorporated into wider marine monitoring and control systems.

Marine sensors may be exposed to salt, moisture, spray, vibration, movement, temperature changes and high winds, while access for maintenance can be limited. Sensor selection should therefore consider environmental protection, materials, operating temperature, approvals and the consequences of losing measurement availability. Gill offers marine sensing technologies designed for demanding vessel and offshore environments.

Calibration provides a traceable way to assess measurement performance against an appropriate reference. Where measurement confidence and traceability are important, calibration can form part of the wider lifecycle management of the vessel’s instrumentation. Labcal provides UKAS-accredited calibration services for a wide range of measurement equipment, supporting the broader measurement ecosystem around marine and industrial systems.

Yes. Gill’s sensing range extends beyond ultrasonic wind measurement to include liquid level, linear and rotary position and oil-condition monitoring. This allows different measurement requirements within a vessel or marine system to be addressed through technologies from the same Gill organisation.

Gill provides engineering support across environmental and industrial sensing applications. Where a requirement does not fit a standard product configuration, the application can be assessed around its measurement requirements, environmental conditions, integration needs and wider system architecture.
