Calibration: pressure

Pressure calibration from vacuum to 1,400 bar

UKAS-accredited calibration for gauges, digital indicators, transmitters, transducers and low pressure instruments, carried out in Lymington by Labcal, the Gill Group's calibration laboratory.

What is pressure calibration?

Pressure calibration applies known pressures to an instrument and compares its readings with a traceable reference standard. The certificate records the error and the measurement uncertainty at each point across the range, giving evidence that a gauge, transmitter or switch reads correctly where safety or quality depends on it.

Labcal's methods are consistent with EURAMET calibration guide CG17. The accredited scope covers hydraulic pressure to 140 MPa, gas pressure from vacuum to 8.2 MPa, and a low pressure capability from 0 to 9 kPa that needs dedicated reference equipment.

Gauge, absolute and low pressure under one laboratory number

Hydraulic and gas pressure are accredited separately, in gauge and absolute modes, with a fine low pressure range for building services, cleanroom and HVAC instruments.

From a dial gauge to a transmitter on a safety system

01

Mechanical pressure gauges

Bourdon tube and other dial gauges. Sealed gauges that cannot be adjusted are reported as found, with advice if replacement is the better option.

02

Digital pressure indicators

Handheld and bench indicators, including those used as working references on site.

03

Pressure transmitters and transducers

Instruments with an electrical output, calibrated against the signal your control system reads.

04

Low pressure instruments

Manometers and low range instruments for building services, cleanrooms and HVAC, accredited from 0 Pa.

05

Pressure switches

Switch points checked and recorded against a traceable reference.

06

Gauge and absolute devices

Gauge and absolute pressure instruments, with barometric correction for absolute work where needed.

Typical makes include Additel, Ashcroft, Budenberg, Druck, Dwyer, Furness Controls, Honeywell, Keller, RS, SIKA, Testo and WIKA.

Tell us what needs calibrating

Use the form on this page with the instrument, the quantity and the points you need. If you are moving from another laboratory, your current certificate is enough for a like-for-like quote, usually within 24 hours.

02

Send it to Lymington

Instruments come to the Labcal laboratory at Ampress Park, Lymington. Calibration is laboratory based rather than on site. Courier collection can be arranged for regular and high-volume customers.

03

Calibration against traceable references

Turnaround averages 8 working days from the day the instrument arrives, with a 3-day fast track available by arrangement. Where an instrument can be adjusted, it is recorded as found, adjusted and recorded again as left.

04

Certificate and return

A UKAS certificate states the measured values, the expanded uncertainty at k=2 and the traceability to national standards, with as-found and as-left results where adjustment was made.

Frequently asked questions

Labcal's UKAS accreditation for pressure runs from -100 kPa gauge to 140 MPa, which is 1,400 bar. Hydraulic pressure is accredited from 500 kPa to 140 MPa, gas pressure from -100 kPa to 8.2 MPa, and absolute gas pressure from 80 kPa to 115 kPa. The full table is on this page.

Labcal's accredited gas pressure scope includes a low range from 0 to 3 kPa and 3 to 9 kPa, which suits the instruments used in building services, cleanrooms and HVAC. Differential pressure is not listed separately on the current UKAS schedule, so tell us how the instrument is used and the laboratory will confirm the route.

If a pressure instrument is found out of tolerance, the as-found condition is recorded on the certificate first. Where the instrument can be adjusted, it is adjusted and recalibrated so the as-left condition is recorded as well. Sealed mechanical gauges that cannot be adjusted are reported as found.

The calibration interval for a pressure instrument should reflect how critical the measurement is, the application, its stability at previous calibrations and any regulation or safety standard that applies. Annual calibration is common for many industrial applications, but your quality system should set the interval.

Yes. Labcal's UKAS schedule notes that pressure devices with an electrical output may be calibrated, and the laboratory is also accredited for DC current and voltage measurement. That means the transmitter's output signal can be recorded against the applied pressure.
