The measurement problem
When the measurement problem doesn't fit in one box
A compact integrated weather station is wonderfully convenient when its configuration matches the job. But what if it doesn't? A national weather network may need a particular anemometer and additional sensors. A coastal monitoring station may need measurements positioned independently. An environmental monitoring system may need to add sensors later.
MetConnect is designed for those situations. Its modular architecture combines integrated weather sensors with connector inputs for additional user-selected sensors, allowing measurements to be brought together into a coordinated system.
That flexibility matters because the cheapest sensor is not necessarily the cheapest system. If the architecture forces compromises in sensor placement, additional interfaces or future expansion, the saving tends to disappear rather quickly.
Integrated or remote wind
An integrated WindSonic on One, a remote Gill anemometer on THP.
WMO-compliant siting
Sensors sit at different heights, where each one belongs.
Third-party inputs
Pt100, analogue and contact closure, with 5 V power on the connectors.
One coordinated output
Time-synchronised data from every sensor, through one output.
Choose your MetConnect
One question decides the MetConnect
Both are separable stations built for WMO-compliant siting, where sensors sit at different heights. The difference is whether the wind sensor comes with it.

MetConnect One
When an integrated, unheated wind sensor is what the site needs, alongside temperature, humidity and pressure.

MetConnect THP
When wind needs to live somewhere else, or the site is cold enough to need a heated anemometer, fitted remotely.
No single MetConnect does all of that. Our team can suggest a pairing.
Both accept a contact closure rain input, a 4-wire Pt100 temperature probe to IEC 60751 and two analogue inputs, 0-5 V or 4-20 mA, with 5 V power available on the sensor connectors. The contact closure input is how both connect the TruMet PW100 optical rain gauge.
MetConnect vs other Gill weather stations
Start with one question: integrated or configurable
MetConnect makes the measurement system more configurable. MaxiMet makes the weather station smaller and simpler. Neither is universally better. The choice depends on what you measure, where the sensors need to sit and whether the architecture is likely to change.

When one compact instrument does the job
- A defined combination of measurements in one housing
- One unit, one cable, one output string
- Less to install and commission than a separable station

When the platform moves
- IP68 as well as IP66
- 6-axis compass with heading, pitch and roll
- GMX260 for wind, GMX560 for wind plus T/H/P

Choosing between them
Where does the wind sensor need to live?
That one question separates the two configurations. Both accept additional sensors, so the measurement set is not what decides between them. Every figure is from the released datasheet.

Why modular
Because not every measurement belongs in the same place
There is a difference between putting several sensors in one enclosure and designing a measurement system properly. Wind measurement may need a clear exposure above the installation. Temperature and humidity may need to be positioned differently. In some applications, the sensor you need simply isn't part of a standard integrated weather station.
MetConnect allows additional user-selected sensors to be connected through dedicated M12 inputs, so the measurement architecture can reflect the physical requirements of the application. The point of modularity is not more things to configure. It is fewer compromises.

Integration
One measurement system. One coordinated data stream.
Modular systems can create their own problems. More sensors can mean more cables, more interfaces and more power requirements, and separate data streams make time alignment harder than it needs to be.
MetConnect combines data from its integrated sensors with the sensors connected to it and provides time-synchronised measurements through a single data output. That reduces the power and communications complexity that can otherwise come with building a multi-sensor weather system.
- RS232, RS422, RS485, SDI-12 and Modbus
- ASCII, Modbus RTU and ASCII, NMEA0183, SDI-12 v1.3
- 1 measurement per 1, 2 or 4 seconds, or polled

Choosing the wind sensor
The weather station doesn't dictate the anemometer
On MetConnect THP the wind sensor is not a fixed part of the package. The station takes a remote Gill anemometer, so engineers can select the instrument that makes sense for the application.
WindSonic is the straightforward choice when dependable 2-axis wind measurement and low maintenance are the priority. WindObserver makes more sense where the application calls for a higher-specification sensor, including demanding marine, aviation or hazardous-area environments. For cold sites, pair THP with a heated WindObserver or WindSonic M.
Low maintenance
Ultrasonic wind measurement means no mechanical wind-sensing components to wear or replace, with a stainless steel hub and IP66 and IP67-rated connections.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is a MetConnect weather station?
MetConnect is Gill Instruments' range of multi-parameter professional weather stations with inputs for additional user-selected sensors. The platform is designed for applications where the required measurement set or sensor arrangement does not fit a fixed, all-in-one weather-station configuration.
Can I use a different wind sensor with MetConnect?
Yes. MetConnect is designed to accommodate a remote, user-selected wind sensor in appropriate configurations. Gill identifies WindSonic and WindObserver as wind-sensor options within its MetConnect architecture.
Can MetConnect connect additional sensors?
Yes. MetConnect provides connector inputs for additional user-selected sensors. MetConnect One and THP each provide three additional M12 sensor connections, while THP also provides a dedicated M12 connection for a remote wind sensor.
Can MetConnect combine data from multiple sensors?
Yes. The platform is designed to combine data from its integrated sensors with connected additional sensors, providing time-synchronised data through the weather station's output. This can reduce the power and communications complexity of a multi-sensor system.
Does MetConnect use ultrasonic wind measurement?
Yes. MetConnect uses ultrasonic technology for wind measurement in compatible configurations. Because there are no moving mechanical wind-sensing components, the system avoids the mechanical wear associated with conventional cup-and-vane anemometers.
Is MetConnect low maintenance?
MetConnect is designed for reliable, low-maintenance operation. Ultrasonic wind measurement eliminates mechanical wind-sensing components, while robust construction and high-IP-rated connectors support use in challenging environments.
Can MetConnect be used for marine applications?
Yes. MetConnect is suitable for applications including ports, harbours, coastal monitoring and ocean buoys. For more demanding moving marine platforms requiring IP68 protection and integrated heading, pitch and roll information, MaxiMet Marine may be the more appropriate architecture.
Is MetConnect suitable for professional weather networks?
Yes. Gill states that the MetConnect concept has been selected by national weather administrations and global multinationals, reflecting its suitability for professional weather-monitoring applications where configurable measurement architectures are required.
What environmental protection does MetConnect have?
The MetConnect hub box is rated IP66 and IP67, and the temperature and humidity sensor and the wind sensor are rated IP66. The hub box and bracket are 316 stainless steel, the sensor housings are UV-stabilised polycarbonate, and the connectors are high-IP-rated for challenging environments. The exact protection specification should be checked against the relevant configuration and datasheet.
