In a hazardous area, the instrument specification starts with the environment in which it will be installed. The applicable certification, installation requirements and interface arrangements must all be considered before measurement performance can be assessed.

Gill Instruments’ WindObserver IS is an intrinsically safe ultrasonic wind sensor certified to ATEX, IECEx and UKEX requirements. It measures wind speeds up to 75 m/s and direction through 360 degrees, with a 316 stainless-steel construction and IP66 protection.

With no moving parts, there are no bearings to seize or wear. Built-in status information also helps monitoring systems distinguish a reported measurement from a sensor fault.

For applications involving gas dispersion assessment, environmental monitoring or other wind-dependent operations, the sensor must be selected and integrated according to the requirements of the wider system.

Exposed to the elements.
Dependent on the data.

Offshore platforms and marine installations bring together exposed structures, critical lifting equipment, helicopter operations and machinery that may be difficult to access. Wind and weather measurements provide important information for operational monitoring, while equipment sensing supports other systems across the installation.

Gill’s ultrasonic wind sensors measure wind speed and direction without moving parts. The WindObserver range includes models designed for demanding environments, while MaxiMet and MetConnect offer compact and modular approaches to environmental monitoring.

The right configuration depends on the application: a helideck monitoring system, a crane installation and a general-purpose weather station do not necessarily have the same requirements. Certification, approvals, heating, mounting, data outputs and integration all need to be considered.

Gill’s wider portfolio can also support machinery monitoring and suitable liquid-level applications around engines, gearboxes and auxiliary equipment.

Relevant technologies: WindObserver, WindObserver IS, MaxiMet, MetConnect, WearDetect and LevelPro.

Keep the engine in control

Gas compression and power generation depend on engines operating with the right ignition and air/fuel control. When performance deteriorates, the consequences can extend beyond the engine itself, affecting the wider installation or process.

Gill Sensors and Controls develops ignition modules and air/fuel ratio control technologies for suitable spark-ignited gas engines. The GS8, GS12 and GT6 ignition modules and the AF120 air/fuel ratio controller address different engine configurations and control requirements.

The AF120 provides closed-loop air/fuel ratio control when integrated with a compatible system. Correct product selection depends on engine architecture, cylinder configuration, operating conditions and control-system requirements.

Alongside engine control, WearDetect can monitor oil-lubricated machinery for ferrous wear debris, water presence and oil temperature. Level sensors can support suitable fuel and oil applications, adding further visibility around critical equipment.

Together, these technologies offer potential across engine control, machinery condition monitoring and fluid-level measurement, without requiring every application to use the same combination.

Relevant technologies: GS8, GS12, GT6, AF120, WearDetect and LevelPro.

Understand the condition of the equipment doing the work

Pumping stations and associated facilities rely on rotating machinery to move fluids through demanding operating environments. Wear inside a gearbox, bearing or other oil-lubricated component can develop before external signs become apparent.

Gill Sensors and Controls’ WearDetect oil-debris sensors monitor ferrous wear debris in real time, with measurement of fine and coarse particles, water presence and oil temperature. The resulting information can help maintenance teams identify changes in machinery condition and plan investigations or maintenance around operational requirements.

Capacitive level sensors can also be suitable for monitoring fuel, oil and other liquids in supporting equipment, depending on the fluid and installation.

Relevant technologies: WearDetect and suitable capacitive level sensors.

A complex site needs more than one view

Refineries and gas-processing facilities bring together rotating machinery, auxiliary engines, storage systems and exposed infrastructure. Different parts of the site create different measurement requirements, from monitoring environmental conditions to checking the health of oil-lubricated machinery.

Gill’s wind sensors and weather stations can support environmental monitoring at suitable locations around a plant. WearDetect provides real-time insight into oil-lubricated machinery, while capacitive level sensors can be considered for appropriate liquid-level applications.

Gill’s engineers can help establish where the Group’s technologies fit the site.

Relevant technologies: Wind sensors, MaxiMet, MetConnect, WearDetect and suitable level sensors.

From storage to ship.
Measurements at the point of operation.

Storage facilities and export terminals combine large tanks, exposed loading areas, pumping equipment and marine operations. Wind and weather conditions can form part of operational assessments, while supporting machinery and suitable liquid-level applications introduce further monitoring requirements.

Gill’s ultrasonic wind sensors and weather stations provide options for exposed environmental monitoring. WearDetect can monitor oil-lubricated machinery, and capacitive level sensors may suit particular fuel, oil and other liquid applications where the fluid properties and installation are compatible.

Relevant technologies: WindObserver, WindSonic M, MaxiMet, MetConnect, WearDetect and suitable level sensors.

Spot the signs of wear while the equipment is still running

Machinery failure rarely begins with a convenient warning light. Wear can develop inside engines, pumps and gearboxes long before a routine inspection reveals a problem.

WearDetect monitors ferrous wear debris in oil in real time, with additional measurement of water presence and oil temperature. Depending on the application and system integration, this information can help identify developing wear, support condition-based maintenance and inform decisions about when equipment needs closer investigation.

For remote or difficult-to-access installations, continuous monitoring can provide useful information between planned visits. It gives teams the evidence to prioritise inspection and maintenance.

Relevant technology: WearDetect.

Measurement confidence doesn’t end at installation

In oil and gas operations, measurement data may contribute to maintenance records, environmental monitoring, engineering assessments and wider operational decisions. Confidence in that data depends on the instrument, its installation and maintenance, and the calibration arrangements appropriate to its use.

Labcal, part of Gill Group, provides UKAS-accredited calibration to ISO/IEC 17025 across six parameters: temperature, gas and air flow, air velocity, pressure, liquid flow and humidity.

Its services cover instruments from other manufacturers, supporting customers who need documented calibration and traceability for equipment used across their operations.

Calibration requirements depend on the instrument, its intended use and the applicable quality or regulatory framework.

When the standard product isn’t the whole answer

Not every oil and gas application fits neatly into a product catalogue. Installation constraints, environmental conditions, interfaces and operating requirements can create challenges that need engineering input.

Gill Group brings together sensing and measurement, Sensors and Controls, engineering and R&D, and calibration. That breadth creates opportunities to assess a measurement challenge across more than one discipline, from selecting an existing instrument to investigating whether an application-specific development is appropriate.

The starting point is the requirement: what needs to be measured, where the instrument will operate, what the system needs to do with the data, and which certifications or approvals apply.
