From the flare stack to the tanker berth
Wind and weather for dispersion and emissions monitoring, certified wind sensing inside classified areas, condition monitoring for the pumps and gearboxes, and UKAS calibration for the gauges and probes across the plant.
A site that answers to the wind
Wind direction decides where a release drifts, where odour travels and which way the flare plume leans. Wind speed decides when a tanker can berth and when work at height stops. A refinery takes those decisions every shift, so the reading has to be there every shift.
Dispersion and emissions. Continuous wind speed and direction at the fenceline and the process units feed dispersion models, odour reporting and environmental permits.
Classified areas. Inside the process units, WindObserver IS gives certified wind measurement where a hazardous-area instrument is specified.
The jetty. Crude arrives and products leave by sea, and berthing and loading run to wind limits measured at the berth.
Ultrasonic sensors have no bearings or cups to wear, and every output carries a status code, so the control room sees a fault as a fault.
Where the refinery sits in the wider operation
The refinery is point 8 on the oil and gas map, between the platforms that feed it and the jetty that ships its products. Select any point to see what is measured there and which Gill technology fits.
Hazardous-area wind measurement
Wind speed and direction in classified areas, where the instrument must meet the applicable hazardous-area requirements.
- WindObserver IS ATEX, IECEx and UKEX certified, 0 to 75 m/s, 316 stainless steel
Helidecks and lifting operations
Wind conditions at exposed operating locations, supporting the systems and personnel responsible for assessing operational limits.
- WindObserver and suitable wind-monitoring configurations
Platform cranes
Wind at the crane boom, where lifting limits are set. A sensor on the crane sees the wind the boom and the load will feel, not the sheltered reading from the deck below.
- WindObserver 75 heated 316 stainless steel, 0 to 75 m/s, Lloyd’s Register type approved
- WindSonic M heated hard-anodised aluminium for exposed positions
Offshore weather monitoring
Environmental conditions around platforms and marine installations, including wind and other weather parameters where required.
- WindObserver wind for demanding environments
- MaxiMet compact weather station
- MetConnect modular weather station, selected to suit the application
Gas compression and power generation
Ignition and air/fuel control for spark-ignited gas engines used in suitable compression and power-generation applications.

Processing plants and refineries
Environmental monitoring at exposed plant locations, alongside machinery monitoring and level measurement where these fit the application.
- Wind sensors and weather stations

Data for the permit.
Refineries monitor wind speed and direction to model where emissions and odour travel, to support environmental reporting and to plan the response to a release. The reading is most useful when it comes from several positions: the fenceline, the process units and the tank farm.
WindSonic M gives heated, hard-anodised wind measurement for exposed positions. MaxiMet compact weather stations add temperature, humidity and pressure in one unit, with rainfall on the GMX600 and GMX603, so a single mast gives the dispersion model everything it needs.
Certified for the process unit
Where a wind reading is needed inside a classified area, WindObserver IS is an intrinsically safe ultrasonic anemometer certified to ATEX, IECEx and UKEX. It measures 0 to 75 m/s and 360 degrees of direction, in 316 stainless steel sealed to IP66, and is installed with its own certified power supply and interface.
It gives flare management, gas dispersion and permit-to-work systems the wind where the hazard is.
Wind limits at the berth
Crude arrives and refined products leave by tanker, and berthing, mooring and loading arm operations all run to wind limits. A sensor at the berth gives the jetty team the wind the ship and the loading arms will feel.
WindSonic M and the heated WindObserver 75 suit exposed coastal jetties, and a TFT wind display puts the live reading in front of the jetty control room.

Pumps, compressors and gearboxes move product around the refinery around the clock. WearDetect watches their oil in real time, reporting fine and coarse ferrous wear debris, water presence and oil temperature, so maintenance is planned around the turnaround schedule.
LevelPro measures fuel and oil level in supporting equipment with no floats or moving parts, and GS8, GS12, GT6 and AF120 gas engine controls cover the gas engines that drive compression and on-site power.
Relevant technologies: WearDetect, LevelPro and Gill gas engine controls.

Labcal, part of Gill Group, provides UKAS-accredited calibration (Lab 0625, ISO/IEC 17025:2017) for pressure, gas flow, liquid flow, temperature, humidity and air velocity. It covers the pressure gauges, transmitters, flow meters and temperature probes found across a refinery, with a certificate for each, and turnaround in 7 working days.

Most refinery positions use a robust ultrasonic anemometer such as WindSonic M, heated and hard-anodised for exposed sites. Positions inside a classified area use WindObserver IS, which is certified to ATEX, IECEx and UKEX. View WindObserver IS.
Wind speed and direction drive dispersion modelling, odour and emissions reporting, flare management and the response plan for a release. At the jetty, wind limits decide when a tanker can berth and load.
Yes. MaxiMet compact weather stations measure wind, temperature, humidity and pressure in one unit, with rainfall on the GMX600 and GMX603, and give a single output string to the control system. View MaxiMet.
WearDetect fits as a smart sump plug or in an oil bypass line and reports fine and coarse ferrous wear debris, water presence and oil temperature in real time over analogue, CANbus or Modbus RTU outputs. View WearDetect.

Tell us about the refinery
Give us the positions, the zone classification and the system the data goes into. An engineer will come back with what we would fit, and with which certification, outputs and calibration.
